Family Day Trip to the White Mountains
A Fun-Filled Itinerary from Cottage Place on Squam Lake

If you’re looking for a memorable family outing while staying at Cottage Place on Squam Lake, a day trip to the White Mountains offers the perfect mix of adventure, nature, and classic New England charm. One of our favorite stops is Clark’s Bears in Lincoln, NH—a unique destination that has been delighting families for generations.
What makes Clark’s Bears especially great for families is the flexibility of their schedule. With multiple performances and train rides offered throughout the day, you can explore the park at your own pace, fitting in the shows and activities that interest your family most.
On a recent visit, we enjoyed the lively atmosphere right from the start with the playful Circus Act, followed by a scenic and entertaining ride on the White Mountain Central Railroad. Along the way, we met the famous Wolfman, whose antics kept everyone laughing.
The highlight for us was the Bear Show, a tradition that dates back to 1949 when the Clark family began training bears for entertainment. Today, this family legacy continues with performances that showcase the bears’ natural intelligence and playful spirit. The bears perform unleashed and unmuzzled in a covered arena, making each show a unique experience influenced by the weather and the bears’ moods.
But Clark’s Bears isn’t just about the shows. There’s plenty to explore, from the splash-filled Anaconda Escape Water Raft Ride to the cooling fun of the Water Blaster Boats and fascinating museums and climbing structures that engage kids of all ages.
When it was time for lunch, we took a short drive to North Woodstock, where not only did we enjoy a delicious meal at the Pemi Public House, but also had fun wandering in and out of the wonderful shops lining the main road. These charming boutiques and stores offer plenty to discover—perfect for stretching your legs and finding unique souvenirs.
After lunch and exploring the shops, we stopped by the nearby Pemigewasset River to dip our toes in the cool water and soak in the beautiful mountain surroundings—a peaceful way to end a day full of family fun.
A few tips for planning your visit: pets are not allowed at Clark’s Bears, and the park’s hours and activities vary throughout the season. The park winds down to limited hours as fall approaches and eventually closes for the season, so summer is the best time to visit and enjoy everything Clark’s Bears has to offer. To avoid any surprises, check their website for the latest calendar and consider purchasing tickets online in advance.
If you’re staying at Cottage Place on Squam Lake, this day trip to Clark’s Bears offers a wonderful way to experience the best of the White Mountains with your family—a day full of memories you’ll cherish for years to come.
